21 de Mayo, Mes del Mar y Día de las Glorias Navales de Chile

En Chile, el mes de mayo es uno de los más importantes históricamente. Esto se debe a que el 21 de mayo es el día de las Glorias Navales, que recuerda y conmemora el Combate Naval de Iquique, que se desarrolló en uno de los principales escenarios de la Guerra del Pacífico: el mar. Fue el día en que los hombres de la frágil Esmeralda, comandados por Arturo Prat, dieron su vida por una causa que les parecía justa y necesaria.

Arturo Prat Chacón era el capitán de la corbeta «Esmeralda», el 21 de mayo de 1879. La nave mantenía el bloqueo naval al puerto peruano de Iquique, se sucedía la Guerra del Pacífico.

Para muchos es discutible el inicio de la guerra y sobre todo las ingentes ganancias que reportaría a quien resultara victorioso. Perú y Bolivia, forman una confederación y declararán una guerra contra nuestro país. 

Las batallas y combates, navales y terrestres, se sucederán en la zona de conflicto, ningún país estaba preparado para esta guerra, pero se movilizan miles de hombres en un corto tiempo. 

En el lado chileno, miles de jóvenes de dieciséis años en adelante, ingresan de voluntarios a los batallones de Línea o de la Guardia Nacional, uniéndose a otros miles que fueron expulsados de Perú, con este contingente rápidamente se crea el Ejército en Campaña, con base en Antofagasta. En el intertanto, se lucha por el dominio del mar, fuerzas peruanas y chilenas, similares, entran a ejercer presión y tratan de romper el equilibrio inestable en que se encuentran. 

El Combate Naval de Iquique y de Punta Gruesa, hacen que Chile pase a dominar las costas del Pacífico americano. 
El 21 de mayo, en la rada de Iquique, se encontraban tres navíos chilenos: La Esmeralda, La Covadonga y el transporte Lamar. Y se dirigían a atacarlos, dos naves peruanas: El Huáscar y La Independencia. Por casualidad, las cinco naves forman la palabra Chile. 

Reconocidas las naves como peruanas, se ordena que el transporte Lamar se retire. Arturo Prat, en la Esmeralda y Carlos Condell en la Covadonga, se visten de gala para combatir. Repasan las defensas y el material que poseen, ordenan a los soldados del regimiento de Artillería de Marina, su ubicación en las cofas, alistar sus machetes de abordaje y proteger el estandarte nacional, la gente de mar y oficiales de la Armada toman ubicación de batalla. En ese momento, Arturo Prat arenga a sus hombres: «¡Muchachos!: La contienda es desigual, pero ánimo y valor. Nunca se ha arriado nuestra bandera ante el enemigo y espero que no sea ésta la ocasión de hacerlo. Por mi parte, os aseguro, que mientras yo viva, esa bandera flameará en su lugar y si yo muero, mis oficiales sabrán cumplir con su deber. ¡Viva Chile!».

El Huáscar, al mando de Miguel Grau se enfrentará a La Esmeralda. La Independencia, al mando de Guillermo More combatirá contra La Covadonga. 

En Iquique, se sucede el primer combate, donde la superioridad del Huáscar hace estragos sobre la vetusta barcarola y la trata de hundir con el espolón. Ese es el momento de grandeza y en que se hace héroe Arturo Prat. él había sido profesor del Manual del Marino, donde se estipulaba las reglas del abordaje. Racionalmente, toma la decisión de saltar al buque enemigo y tratarlo de tomar, por esa razón lo siguen artilleros de marina, en este caso el sargento Juan de Dios Aldea. Morirán en el intento. 

Clavan las banderas, no habría rendición. 

La Esmeralda, es destrozada y por segunda vez, es espoloneada. El teniente primero Ignacio Serrano Montaner salta al abordaje con un grupo de abordaje, allí se destacaban los artilleros con sus machetes y rifles, todos morirán. 

En el final, al tercer espolonazo, el guardiamarina Ernesto Riquelme Venegas dispara el último cañonazo, dando vivas a Chile, y la nave se hunde. Ese día, ciento cuarenta y tres chilenos mueren en el combate. 

En el intertanto, La Independencia perseguía a la corbeta Covadonga, que se escabullía y trataba de alejarse del blindado peruano que trataba de espolonearla, es en esa maniobra que encalla el navío de More. Luego, Miguel Grau mandará a incendiarla, para que no caiga en manos chilenas. 

La gesta de Arturo Prat y sus valientes, corrió como reguero de pólvora y miles de jóvenes reemplazaron a los héroes de Iquique y con ello se dio un impulso anímico definitivo para luchar. El triunfo de Carlos Condell, significó el dominio naval chileno, que meses después se afianzaría con la captura del Huáscar.

                    como restos de vencedores la bandera cubrió el mar.
